Do links hurt reach on X?

Treat link reach as mixed and changing. Say the useful part in the post, and do not expect this tool to punish or reward the URL.

Checklist

  • The post still makes sense if nobody taps the link.
  • The first line states the point, not “new blog post.”
  • You checked your own link posts against your own originals.
  • You are not quoting an old penalty chart as if it were current.
  • You know the checker’s score ignores links on purpose.

The short answer is that it changed

“Do links hurt reach on X?” does not have one permanent answer. For a while, people saw link posts travel less than posts that kept the reader on X. In July 2026, X’s product head said link posts have not been penalized for over a year. Earlier data showed low reach for link posts. Hold both facts at once. The situation is mixed, and it has already changed once.

A product statement is not a measurement of your account. “Not penalized” means the ranker is not supposed to dock a post for containing a link. It does not mean every link post will match your best original. People still have to care, the preview still has to be clear, and off-platform clicks still end the session on X. Those are different from a formal penalty.

If you need a number for planning, use your analytics, not a recycled thread from 2024. The method is in how to estimate tweet impressions. Split link posts out so they do not distort the median for everything else.

Do links hurt reach on X now that the story changed

The older pattern was easy to see in other people’s charts: posts with a URL often sat at the bottom of the impression list. Some of that was the audience. A link to a long page asks for a second click. Some of it may have been ranking. Creators responded by putting the link in a reply, or by rewriting the post as a thread and skipping the URL.

The July 2026 comment says that kind of penalty has been gone for more than a year. If that holds, burying the link is no longer a required ritual. It can still be a writing choice. A reply link is easy to miss. A link in the post is easy to see. Watch your own counts for a month before you declare a rule. When you read a new penalty claim, ask for the date and the sample.

Put the point in the post even if the link is fine

A link is a handoff. The post should still be worth reading in the timeline. “I wrote about onboarding” is a label. “We cut onboarding from 12 steps to 4 by deleting the checklist” is a post that happens to have a link. People who never tap still leave with the idea. People who tap know why they are tapping.

Lead with the result, then the link. A naked URL as the first line wastes the only sentence some people read. Link only to work you have the right to share. The disclaimer covers trademarks and the limit of this tool.

What this checker does with a link

Links do not change the score. The tool may note that it found one. That note is information, not a deduction. Hashtags work the same way: they do not add or remove points. More than two hashtags only adds a note that fewer would read cleaner.

You can still write a weak link post. The hook, the value, and the last line are scored as usual. “New post:” plus a URL will look empty on those checks because it is empty. Fix the words. Do not delete the URL just to chase a score that was never docking you for it.

The reach band also ignores the URL. It looks at Premium, followers, mutuals, format, and time window. Marking a link post as an “original” does not tell the band that a link is present. Read the score and band notes if that split is confusing. Then compare two drafts, one with the point written out and one that only teases the link.

A simple check you can run this month

Post the same kind of update twice, once with the URL in the body and once in the first reply. Keep the first line similar. Record impressions after a day. One pair proves nothing. A few pairs start to describe your account.

If both placements match, stop hiding URLs. If the reply version wins by a lot, keep testing. The July 2026 comment and your timeline can disagree for a while. Keep the useful sentence in the post. The checker can score that sentence. It will not tell you which placement X prefers this week.

Questions

Does the checker lower the score when I add a link?

No. You may see a note that a link was found. Points do not change. A weak score means the writing checks were weak.

Should I put every link in the first reply?

Not by default. A 2026 comment from X’s product head said link posts had not been penalized for over a year. Test your own posts. Earlier low-reach data is why people still hesitate.

Do short links and long links score differently here?

No. The checker does not rank domains or URL length. Readers still prefer to see where they are going.

Will a link make the reach band drop?

No. The band does not read the draft. Format, account type, followers, mutuals, and the time window are what move it.

What should the post say if the link is the whole point?

Say the conclusion in one or two sentences, then give the link for the proof. Do not make people tap to learn what you believe.
